Founded in 1976, Santa Barbara Middle School is a co-educational school that offers students in grades 6-9 a profound educational experience. Our curriculum philosophy, the Diamond, delivers excellence in Academics, Creative Arts & Sports, Outdoor Education, and Community Involvement. Position Opening: 
We seek a dynamic and talented teacher who enjoys secondary education and can teach various Spanish courses at the junior high and high school levels. An ability to teach AP-level courses is a plus. The ideal teacher will create a rich learning environment that enhances critical thinking skills, employs varied teaching approaches, and uses multiple tools to assess student understanding and competencies. The teacher will have the ability to work collaboratively with other Language teachers, will be able to innovate through blended course arrangements if required, and will employ differentiated instructional methods in developing and delivering effective lessons to a diverse group of learners. Enthusiasm for classroom innovation and the ability to devise various educational experiences is valued at SBMS. Flexibility, humor, and willingness to work with students inside and outside the class are valued. The teacher will have a proactive orientation to seek parent input and counsel to advance student success effectively.

Candidates will also take part in teaching electives and will actively participate in our outdoor education program, which will include approximately 20 nights per year away from campus on trips. This will consist of kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, camping, and other possible activities.
 
Additionally, we seek a candidate who is passionate about working with young people. Candidates should support the mission of SBMS and be eager to join a community where collaboration is valued and openness to growth is the norm. Candidates should model a growth mindset, maintain a sense of humor, and demonstrate a warm personality.

Duties and responsibilities include: 
  • Lesson planning 
  • Preparation and implementation of daily lessons 
  • Delivery of assignments and timely evaluation of all relevant class work and student progress 
  • Design and implementation of appropriate, authentic assessments and support of individual student learning styles 
  • Timely and proactive communication with parents about student progress 
  • Collaboration with other members of faculty, administration, and staff 
  • Willingness to adapt and change instructional approaches based on peer and supervisory suggestions and recommendations 
  • Participation in school-sponsored curricular and extracurricular activities on and off campus 
  • Effective and timely communication with varied school constituencies in person and through various electronic forms of communication 
  • Support for school-wide initiatives through committee work, where appropriate 
  • Supervision and/or participation in non-academic activities, including outdoor trips and electives
  • Support our Scholarship program with family communications and translations.
Required Qualifications: 
The successful candidate must have a Clear Single Subject Teaching credential in Spanish and/or Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Spanish Language. 

A minimum of five years of teaching experience is preferred. However, candidates with less experience may be considered depending on their background. 

Successful candidates will also possess a positive attitude, excellent written and verbal skills, strong organizational skills, and proven success within a work setting that requires collaboration, cooperation, and collegiality.

Salary:
